Reading the evidence

What an indicator can tell us.

Prices & inflation

A price index tracks the cost of a defined basket. Inflation describes a change in that index over a stated period. Basket weights, base periods and the comparison window matter.

Output & economic growth

GDP measures production within an economy. Nominal and real measures answer different questions. Revisions and changes in methodology affect comparisons across releases.

Monetary & financial conditions

A policy rate describes one element of monetary policy. Lending rates, credit conditions and financial-market responses help explain how decisions reach the economy.

Public finance & debt

Budget allocations, actual expenditure, balances and debt describe different aspects of public finance. Coverage, accounting basis and reporting periods should be checked before comparison.
